Since then, the hunting lodge and pleasure palace has risen visibly on a 516 m high quartz porphyry cone above the Zschopau Valley. Due to its architecture and exposed location, it is also called the "Crown of the Ore Mountains". Because of its monumentality, it is considered today to be one of the most beautiful Renaissance castles in Central Europe. Augustusburg Castle follows a strictly geometric floor plan, marked by four square corner pavilions and connecting wings enclosing an inner courtyard. A similar concept can be found in many 16th-century castles. The hunting lodge consists of two areas with different functions: the front core castle was the area for the electoral family and the court. The utility buildings were situated to the rear (CREDIT/Copyright (c): Rainer Weisflog /Contact: E-Mail: Foto@Weisflog.net ; Tel. +490355/824499; More info and terms and conditions at: www.rainer-weisflog.de)
