Musical: “Monty Python's Spamalot”
Book and Lyrics: Eric Idle
Music: John Du Prez and Eric Idle
A new musical lovingly ripped off from the Monty Python film »Monty Python and the Holy Grail« |
Based on the original screenplay by Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones and Michael Palin | German translation by Daniel Große Boymann Many legends surround King Arthur. Was he actually a Celtic-British military leader who won a battle against the Saxons around 540 AD, or rather a medieval ruler?
The British comedy group Monty Python, who revolutionized television conventions in the UK during the 1970s and 1980s, opted for a middle ground. While Arthur is indeed a medieval king in their musical, he is one who must first search for followers and earn their loyalty. There is, for instance, the awkward Sir Bedevere, or Sir Galahad, whose real name is Dennis and who believes kings ought to be elected. Or Sir Robin, who fearfully runs away from any adventure.
Completely fearless, on the other hand, Sir Lancelot fights all enemies of Camelot by Arthur’s side. Yet he, too, hides a secret he wants to share with no one.
Monty Python’s knights defy all common clichés of glorious chivalry, but when they receive a personal quest from God to find the legendary Holy Grail, nothing and no one can stop them. No rude Frenchmen, no bloodthirsty piglet, and no cruel Black Knight, for by their side is always the mighty Lady of the Lake and, of course, Arthur’s faithful servant Patsy.
In 1975, Monty Python released the film »Monty Python and the Holy Grail«.
Thirty years later, former member Eric Idle wrote the musical »Spamalot« based on it. The 2005 work is an absurd, slapstick ride from the Middle Ages to modern times – a parody of the musical genre itself, featuring unforgettable songs and a magnificent ensemble, joined by local community members.
