Zwickau
Maria Luisa – Four's Better Company (German-Language Premiere)
Play by Juan Mayorga | German translation by Stefanie
Gerhold | German-language premiere
"You should put more names on your mailbox, María Luisa,"
the building caretaker tells her one day.
She lives alone in her apartment in the large apartment building, and elderly women living on their own
are particularly vulnerable to burglaries and attacks, as she surely knows.
"Pah, living on my own, that sounds like being lonely, and I'm really not lonely at all," María Luisa thinks. Doesn't her friend Angelines call several times a day, and don't they meet every Thursday for coffee and a chat?
All right then, she simply adds three extra names to her mailbox—men's names, just to be safe. But what if she were actually living with these men in her apartment? With Benito Beckenbauer, the exiled general from
Latin America, or Emerson Azzopardi, the shy poet from Malta, or the patient Juan Olmedo, who always so thoughtfully reminds her to take her pills?
With the three new flatmates, she can once again have profound conversations, no longer has to take the subway alone, and there is finally someone she can go dancing with.
Yet are they really there, these men?
Juan Mayorga is one of the most prominent contemporary Spanish playwrights.
Theater Plauen-Zwickau is privileged to present the German premiere of his latest play, "María Luisa", in which Mayorga—a rarity in world literature—places an elderly woman at the center of the story, taking her on a thoughtful, stirring, and at the same time delightfully absurd heroine's journey. After all, who says you can't completely reinvent yourself in old age?
Madrid author Juan Mayorga will be traveling to Zwickau especially for the premiere.
Director Tobias Rott
Stage / Puppets / Costumes Cornelia Brey
Dramaturgy Luise Curtius with Claudia Lüftenegger, Ute Menzel; Philipp
Andriotis, Patrick Bartsch, Hanif Idris, Lev Semenov
Ticket prices: €11.00 - €25.00
