Zwickau
2nd Philharmonic Concert
Great Britain is the central theme of this concert program!
First, the intermezzo »The Walk to the Paradise Garden« from the opera »A Village Romeo and Juliet« by Frederick Delius builds a bridge to the British Isles: Delius spent his childhood and youth in England, but the composer's family had German roots; the opera itself is based on Gottfried Keller's novella »A Village Romeo and Juliet« and, in the intermezzo shortly before the tragic conclusion, evokes the vision of a peaceful idyl.
The composer Ethel Smyth was an extraordinary personality: defying all resistance from her own family, she studied composition at the Leipzig Conservatory, remained undeterred by setbacks and disparaging criticism, and
was actively involved in the British women's suffrage movement—a confident and passionate artist!
The Concerto for Horn, Violin and Orchestra is one of her final works—premiered in London in 1927,
it stands firmly in the tradition of the great Romantic instrumental concertos, captivating audiences with both dramatic and lyrical sounds alike.
Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy was only 20 years old when he visited Scotland with a friend: he was deeply impressed by the »misty atmosphere«, historic yet ruined walls, and the distinctive ambiance—»serious, dark, very lonely«,
as he described it. Musically, his impressions of Scotland were reflected in his Symphony No. 3—initial ideas emerged immediately, yet it would take 13 years before the symphony was premiered in Leipzig in 1842.
Conductor Markus L. Frank
Soloists Taras Zdaniuk (violin), Antoine Jeannot (horn);
Clara-Schumann-Philharmoniker Plauen-Zwickau
Pre-concert talk half an hour before the performance starts
Ticket prices: €7.00–42.00
