Dance evening by Sergei Vanaev with music by Georges Bizet (1838–1875), Rodion
Shchedrin (1932–2025), and Igor Stravinsky (1882–1971)

One evening, two ballets! Experience two masterpieces of 20th-century ballet music in thrilling choreographies by Sergei Vanaev. Carmen is surrounded by admirers. But she wants to be free. She is constrained by jealous men, above all Don José. He is obsessed with her. She leaves him for the bullfighter
Escamillo. In the end, she suffers the same fate as the wild and freedom-loving bull; death separates desire and reality. “Carmen” represents theatre in its most magnificent form. Based on the eponymous opera by Georges Bizet, Rodion
Shchedrin composed one of the most performed ballet scores of all time.

To achieve this, he selected an orchestral arrangement as far removed from the well-known original as possible. Using the fresh timbres of strings and 47 (!) percussion instruments, he crafted a novel tonal language for the familiar melodies.

“The Rite of Spring” (Le Sacre du Printemps): Tension. Conflict. Dissonance.
Terms that fit both Igor Stravinsky's music and
social coexistence. In “Sacre”, powerful rhythmic and percussive elements encounter tension-filled melody and harmony. Moving from the archaic ritual of the spring sacrifice of the original libretto, Vanaev explores the clash
of conflicting values within a society.
