Zwickau
Concert: Mozart - Requiem
The choral-symphonic concert for Totensonntag (Sunday in Commemoration of the Dead) opens with the cantata “Wachet! betet! betet! wachet!” by Johann Sebastian Bach, which is based on texts concerning the end of days and the anticipation of Christ's return. At the heart of the concert evening is Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's “Requiem” – the composer began working on the commissioned piece in 1791, but fell seriously ill during his work and died on 5 December 1791. Constanze Mozart subsequently commissioned various composers to complete it, using the finished movements, sketches, and drafts in Mozart's own hand. Numerous legends have formed around Mozart's death and this unfinished Requiem, which enjoys enduring popularity to this day.
