Guided Tour "Jewish Life in Zwickau"

Guided tour "Jewish Life in Zwickau"
mattrose.de
100 years ago, an active Jewish community with over 500 members existed in Zwickau. When Zwickau became a booming industrial city at the end of the 19th century, many Jews moved to the city to seek their fortune. Many of them played a part in Zwickau's rise to becoming a western Saxon metropolis. The most well-known among them was the Schocken family, famous throughout Germany for their eponymous department store chain and their tremendous social commitment.
However, with the National Socialists' insidious rise to power in the winter of 1933, the persecution and marginalization of Jews began in Zwickau as well. Some members of the Jewish community fled their hometown, but many died in the Shoah. It was not until the 1990s that the survivors were able to make peace with their hometown.

During the approximately 100-minute guided tour, former sites of Jewish life and Nazi persecution in Zwickau will be visited, illuminating the history behind them.
