Irish Christmas - Bob Bales & Friends

Music, Stories & Dance from Old Ireland
When Bob Bales – born in County Mayo in the west of Ireland – joins forces with Maciek Paszek (violin), Michel Crosio (pianist and keyboard player, producer and arranger for Marla Glen), and Harry Sawatzki (bodhrán drum) for one of these extraordinary and atmospheric winter concerts, then it's IRISH CHRISTMAS! An evening that brings the special Christmas traditions of the Emerald Isle to us with rousing instrumental music, singing, Irish stories, the renowned Irish joy of dancing, and a deep Irish zest for life. It was Bob Bales whose music helped the famous tap dance show MAGIC OF THE DANCE achieve worldwide acclaim. At IRISH CHRISTMAS, he sings and plays acoustic guitar in a Scottish folk style, in addition to the Irish bouzouki.
Also joining the show is dancer Gyula Glaser, a three-time Irish Dance European Champion who was a dancer with Gaelforce Dance for many years. In 2015, Glaser was the star and solo dancer in Magic of the Dance. Joining Glaser on stage is his equally virtuoso wife Nicole Ohnesorge, who has already won the German Irish Dance Championship 3 times, became Vice European Champion, and took 3rd place at the World Championships. Equipped with such immense musical and dance prowess, the artists of IRISH CHRISTMAS whisk the audience away to the roots of Celtic Christmas traditions while also offering an insight into contemporary Irish festive customs.
With a gentle voice and a touched heart, Bob Bales tells visitors stories from old Ireland, of Christmas in Ireland as a cheerful and atmospheric celebration among large gatherings of family and friends, where both doors and hearts are wide open. There are a number of unique Christmas customs, such as the Christmas swim in the freezing Irish Sea or the musical mummers' parades of the Wrenboys dressed in imaginative straw masks and colorful costumes. After delivering the presents—which are only opened on the morning of December 25th—the Irish Santa Claus may even fortify himself with Guinness and a mince pie, while the Irish generally swear by their hot Christmas whiskey punch with lemon, cloves, and brown sugar as a winter warmer. Decorating front doors with a holly wreath before Christmas is also widespread. By the way, in Ireland, people wish each other a Merry Christmas either in Irish with Nollaig Shona Duit [pronounced roughly like Nollig-hon-a-gwitch] or in English: Happy Christmas!
