Although Christmas music as such did not exist in the Middle Ages, many songs can still be found that tell the Christmas story. They describe a flower blooming from a stem of Jesse's rod and "...a child born in Bethlehem". The renowned Leipzig ensemble Nimmersêlich performs Advent concerts that bear little resemblance to the conventional Christmas music heard everywhere else. Carefully researched and sensitively arranged, melodies from the 11th to the 15th centuries come to life, interpreted with vocals, lute, flute, hurdy-gurdy, harp, and other historical instruments.
